Jawi script, also known as Jawi alphabet, is referred to as Pegon and Gundhil in the Javanese region, Jawoë in Aceh Darussalam, Yawi in Pattani, and Jawi in Sumatra (Riau, Jambi, and West Sumatra), Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. According to the Kamus Dewan Fourth Edition dictionary, Jawi script refers to Arabic letters with a few additional letters used to write in the Malay language. Meanwhile, Jawi letters signify Arabic letters with some additional letters used for writing in the Malay language.

Jawi script is one of the two official writing systems in Brunei and is also used as an alternative writing system in Malaysia. In terms of usage, Jawi script was once the standard alphabet for the Malay language but has been replaced by the Latin alphabet. Consequently, Jawi script is now limited to religious and cultural purposes. The everyday use of Jawi script is preserved in areas occupied by more conservative Malay communities, such as Sulu in the Philippines, Pattani in Thailand, Kelantan in Malaysia, and several Malay settlement areas in Indonesia.
